Dear Editor,
The people of Detroit Zen Center felt devastated by the news of the lost lives of so many youngsters in Korea. Because even though we are so many thousands of miles away, our home temple is Sudeok sa, so our spiritual home is Korea. Even though we are foreigners, our karma is not.
However, we felt almost helpless to express our true feeling to Korea and asked, how can we offer any help? How can we give our support?
With this question in our heart we decided to make paper dragonflies and send them all the way from the Detroit River to the ocean of Korea (symbolically) as a way of expressing our deep hope to help and ease the pain of our Korean friends and children.
In Native American tradition, the dragonfly symbolizes renewal and re-birth. It is a very positive symbol of rising above difficulty toward freedom. It is an old Native American folk superstition that a dragonfly can rescue the trapped spirits of those who died in the sea.
We had the students of local schools and Detroit residents color the dragonflies. We colored over 5000 dragonflies and wrote prayers.
There were 120 people at the 49 day ceremony including councilmembers and Hamtramck Mayor.
At the ceremony we did the Thousand Eyes and Hands chanting, namu amita-bul, and kwanseum bosal. Also we offered incense and made prostrations.
After the ceremony about 30 people walked in a line from Hamtramck to the Detroit River with the string that tied together all the dragonflies. There, we chanted and then we put all the dragonflies into the ocean.
Our hearts are with Korea.
Thank you,
Myungju
